Port & Starboard - Regional Winners of Fish & Chip Shop of the Year 2006
For over 50 years the award winning Port & Starboard Cafe in Indian Queens (just outside Newquay in Cornwall) has had an enviable reputation for quality fish & chips, but when Ricky & Cheryl took it over in October 2004 they realised it would need a lot of their time and investment to bring it up to the standard they wanted to set.
The shop is in a great location just off the main A30, with seating for up to 83 inside and picnic benches outside tempting tourists and locals alike with a great selection of fresh foods cooked to order - their menu ranges from Cornish Crab Ploughman's and Smoked Fish Platters through to Cod, Skate, Haddock and Hoki, all served with Cornish Potatoes, chipped to perfection.
The decor is modern and relaxed and is probably one of the cleanest and best kept restaurants in Cornwall. The range they had inherited was old and hard to work and also needed constant attention - they both knew in order to produce quality produce each and every time they would need to invest in a new range.
Ricky says 'I looked at other ranges, specifically High Efficiency, and the honest truth is that I totally believed in Robert Furey & Florigo - and its true, this is a completely different ballgame and I am now in total control'. Ricky and Cheryl invested wisely in a made to measure Florigo Island range, hand crafted at their factory in Holland with High Efficiency Fish, Chip and Snack pans with Flotronic Computer Controls, Halogens and ceramic controllers in the hotboxes, Mirror Doors and 2 bain marie's built into the extended lip of the island range.
'The product', says Ricky 'is far superior, in fact the quality of the food is the best I have ever seen and produced and I have been in the catering trade over 30 years!'. Ricky has also realised the benefits of the world wide web and the cafe boasts an extremely good website, they are even mentioned on Les Routiers!
He also has an award from Seafish as a quality fryer and was one of only 19 shops named as area winners of Fish & Chip Shop of the year in 2005 and they have also juts been told they are area winners again in 2006 - we wish them luck in the final! His kitchen is open for all to see, and indeed all you see are shiny white tiles and gleaming stainless steel.
All fish and chips shops should be this good! A worthy winner of countless accolades and at the end of the day real tasty fish and chips cooked in the tried and tested fashion.
